Big Win For Ansonia. Who will they play next Thursday?

Ansonia dismisses the Cats and look to remain the NVL Champs. I am one who thought Seymour would prevail in this one, but once again I got it wrong. I wasn't there, had work commitments, but I want to hear from you guys about the game. Two questions; 1. Did the better team win? 2. Now that they played each other, do you take Roberts or Osiecki?

Woodland @ Kennedy tonight! I see the Hawks taking this one and facing the unfortunate opportunity of playing Ansonia again. ATTENTION AD's: Ansonia already beat them head to head. Get rid of this stupid game!!!

Yes, the better "TEAM" won. Osiecki is one, if not the, top player in the state, but he can't win alone. Ansonia forced Shagrue to beat them with his arm. He was unable to do that. Osiecki did everything he could to keep Seymour in it, but Ansonia had more weapons. Roberts, Bilodeau, Moore, Dobbs, and Hyde had outstanding games. Ansonia's ability to control the line of scrimmage was big as well.

As for Roberts or Osiecki, it's apples and oranges. They are two entirely different players.

Tonight should be very interesting!
Can Kennedy run against Woodland?
Can Woodland run against Kennedy.

Two teams using back to the future offenses. Think about that!

BTW, alot of the football geniuses throughout the Valley (Valley runs from Torrington to Derby, OBTW) hammered Chris Sarlo when he put in the single wing. Don't look now, but several college AND NFL teams are using a variant of the "wing". Woodland's wing-T is a variant of the single wing, modified by among other colleges years ago, Delaware. The Delaware Wing-T offense was highly successful for Craig Peters at Naugatuck. Chris Anderson & Tim Shea both sought out the sage coach for his input on the intricies of this offense.

It's back to the future at the stadium.

kris1,

Thanks for the astute comment regarding Roberts vs. The Big O !
Excellent, to the point and very true!

OZ is a helluva player. My only question is why Seymour stayed with the 7 man front when it was clear that Ansonia was going to run the ball. At least cheat your safeties up a little instead of having them 10 yards off the ball. But then Ansonia would have started to throw the ball. I guess you're damned if you do and damned if you don't.

i do not think the better team won personally. With that being said, I do believe Ansonia played better tonight. Seymour had just as many chances as Ansonia did but for some reason just could not capitalize on them. If they were to play again I would stilll take Seymour. BTW, some fans from ansonia said some pretty bad thingd after the game as the Seymour players were walking out from the field.

Some of the Ansonia fans are classless, but Seymour has some too. Thats what makes this a great rivalry. But when you start to personally attack someone, thats where I draw the line. It's sure not like it used to be, but there is some real animosity between these schools.

I think Seymour wins 4 of 10 contests against Ansonia. Ansonia has too many weapons...but Shugrue is better than he showed.

Side note: I think we will find classless people at every school and in every town...and it doesn't matter what profession they are in. Some may have great educations and some may be blue collar. I know a grad of a well regarded New England Div 1 school who's ex-wife paid for his kids to go to a semi-private school while he basically did nothing (and still doesn't). But he walks around talking and typing about how much better he and his kids are because of the sacrifices he's made to give them the type of education he's gotten. Conversely, I know a union truck driver with no college education who dedicates his life to his family and coaching kids. His son has had an outstanding football career and there is simply a quiet pride...and always an offer to help if you need it.

personally i think seymour mainly lost because of the last quarter of the game...i think bad play calls were made, especially on the last drive of the game when seymour had the ball firts and goal and they threw the ball 4 times. give the freackin ball to ozzie and let his linemen and recievers make the blocks they have been making all year for the score. some of those play calls were dumb.

After viewing the game at my old man's house (thanks for nothing Comcast), I have a few observations:

1. The Shugrue incomplete pass/fumble play really should have been called an incomplete pass and NOT a fumble.

2. The facemask/horsecollar play was NOT a facemask, could maybe (if you were Spooney) be called a horsecollar, but Hyde had more shirt than anything.

3. This mystical signal Oseiski flashed the Ansonia bench seems really unlikely after watching him every game this year. I saw both teams helping each other up on more plays than not...tons of mutual respect ON the field.

4. The MSG guys did a great job, seem to have a ton of respect for both schools and are generally just excited about the game. A lesson many on this board could probably learn a lesson from.

5. This was a GREAT game. It was 21-21 at one point. BOTH teams struggled with turnovers. If you remove that last Seymour fumble they would be tied at 3-3 for giving the ball up. I personally like Seymour's odds with the ball back down 27-21 with 8 min to go. So that one fumble was really the game up until that point. Admittedly the last eight minutes Seymour fell apart, but the tone of many on this blog and others is that Ansonia pummeled the Cats, and after viewing the game on TV (as well as being there) that simply isnt the case.

5. This game made me proud. The admiration these guys had for both programs should make Crosby, Woodland, HC, Wolcott, etc all swell up with pride to be a part of it. The league was represented very well. So the Masuk, Pompy, Brookfield and FCIAC guys can talk down about the NVL on the CTPOST blogs until the cows come home......State Titles are the big trophy, and we as a league have more than our share.

FYI - There is no horse collar in high school that is an NCAA and Pro rule so clearly the right call was made as it was not a face mask.

JohnnyRibbs said...

Agreed Icallthem. As I noted, it was more jersey than anything else. Should have also mentioned on replay Ansonia's last flubbed kick off was CLEARLY not an attempt at an onsides, as the tee went about 40 yards and the ball went about 8.

I watched the game this morning and froze the picture of the Seymour QB fumbling and it was definitely a fumble. The Ansonia DE hit the QB's arm before it went forward and then the ball went off his hand sideways and ended up going backwards about 2 or 3 yards.

Rich S said...

Ok, last time, IT WAS A FACEMASK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The1voyce said...

Geeeeeez. I didn't see a facemask penalty.

JohnnyRibbs said...

Was NOT a face mask. Was NOT a fumble. We can do this all night.

more importantly.....
Did Spoony really blame his bench (or lacktherof)for the loss in the CT Post Article?

I am surprised Boss didn't have an entire day dedicated to this quote: "There was nothing wrong with the kids that played football on this football field that played for Seymour," said Seymour coach Paul Sponheimer. "We played 13 kids tonight. It's the kids on the sidelines that didn't give us the opportunity to get somebody in there and get a breather. They wore us down."

Anonymous said...

i think thats a legitimate statement. If seymour plays 13 kids an entire game they are going to get tired. Its high school football , not the pors here. Also, did you see some of those kids on the sideline? Thats who they practice against. Thats why for most of the year they have "started games bad." They dont get a good look because of the size, or lack there of, as well as speed they practice against. You cant blame the kids on the bench but still...

JohnnyRibbs said...

Still a pretty crappy comment if that was the sentiment. Those kids don't play because Spoony doesn't put them in.

They used about 15 kids all year, and there were plenty of blowout games to give all of those benchwarmers some tick-tock.

First off, a lot of teams are suffering from lower numbers. Secondly, once again the decision to split up Oxford and Seymour proves to be a stupid decision. I'll bet there's a few players at Oxford that could bring something to the table for the Cats.

Rich S said...

My son talked to Shugrue after the game and Connor said that Hydes hand was inside the mask far enough to almost poke him in the eye. So who do you want to believe, people who were 40 to 50 yards away, or the kid in the play? End of sermon, the refs blew the call, period. Just like they blew the call on the "fumble". Would either of the calls going the other way change the outcome of the game? Probably not, but it would have been nice to find out.
